Several epidemiological studies have demonstrated a direct relationship between the Mediterranean diet and the prevention of cardiovascular diseases. Extra virgin olive oil, with all its health benefits, is indeed one of the cornerstones of this nutritional model.

This was recently affirmed by UNESCO, which in 2010 proclaimed the Mediterranean Diet as “intangible cultural heritage of humanity” in Nairobi. UNESCO emphasized that it is characterized “mainly by olive oil, cereals, fresh or dried fruits, and vegetables, a moderate amount of fish, dairy, and meat, and numerous seasonings and spices, all accompanied by wine or infusions.”
